Ghost is a publishing platform designed for independent journalists, writers, and content creators who want complete control over their website, audience, and business model. It's open-source and user-funded with no venture capital, giving it a different philosophy than venture-backed platforms: the company explicitly positions itself around creator independence and transparency rather than growth-at-all-costs. Ghost provides website hosting, content publishing tools, membership infrastructure, newsletter delivery, and analytics all in one platform, making it suitable for creators who want to build a serious media business with real infrastructure.

The core platform is a website builder with professional editor for writing and multimedia. The editor supports rich content including galleries, video embeds, audio, interactive elements, and dynamic cards, so published content can be more than plain text. Ghost includes a library of marketplace themes created by designers, or creators can use custom themes for complete design control. Unlike many website builders that focus on drag-and-drop simplicity, Ghost's theme system appeals to creators who want sophisticated design without being locked into pre-built templates. The whole experience is built to encourage publishing, not to add friction or require learning design software.

Membership and subscription functionality is native to Ghost, not an add-on. Creators can define free and paid member tiers, charge membership fees directly through Stripe, and gate content so only paid members access premium articles, newsletters, or resources. Members get a login portal where they manage their subscription, update billing, view their payment history, and download any member-only resources. From the publisher's side, you can create custom member-only content, send exclusive newsletters to members, and view analytics on subscriber acquisition, retention, churn, and revenue.

Payment processing uses Stripe as the native payment provider. Ghost integrates directly with your Stripe account, so payment processing flows through there and payouts go directly to your Stripe account on Stripe's normal schedule (typically two business days). This is important: Ghost takes 0% transaction fees on subscription revenue. The only fees are Stripe's standard payment processing fees (which are paid to Stripe, not Ghost), so a creator keeps the full subscription price minus Stripe's processing costs. This aligns Ghost's incentives with creators: the company makes money from monthly platform fees, not from taking a cut of every subscription, so Ghost profits when creators build sustainable membership businesses.

Ghost's newsletter system is built into the core platform. Creators can send emails to their entire audience or to specific subscriber segments (free members, paid members, specific tags or labels). The newsletter design editor uses the same drag-and-drop interface as the content editor, so sending a formatted email doesn't require separate skills. Newsletters can be sent as HTML, plaintext, or both. Importantly, newsletter delivery is included in the platform fee, so creators don't pay per email sent or per subscriber, unlike standalone email platforms that charge more as audience grows. This makes newsletters much cheaper to operate at scale.

Pricing for Ghost is subscription-based and tiered by subscriber limit. The Starter plan is $18 per month and supports up to 1,000 members, including the core publishing, website, and newsletter features. The Publisher plan costs $29 per month, also supporting 1,000 members, and adds staff accounts (up to 3 users), custom themes, and paid member subscriptions. The Business plan is $199 per month and supports up to 10,000 members, including 15 staff users and priority support. For creators with even larger audiences or enterprise needs, Ghost offers custom pricing with unlimited members and staff. All plans include 0% payment processing fees on member subscriptions, a custom domain, free SSL certificates, and automated backups. There are no additional fees for email, newsletter subscribers, or content storage. The simplicity of the pricing model is intentional: you know exactly what you pay per month, and there are no surprise charges as you grow.

The analytics dashboard provides insight into what matters for a publishing business: subscriber acquisition and retention, revenue per subscriber, which content drives engagement, and traffic sources. Creators can see churn rates, understand which content types or member tiers drive the most revenue, and track engagement over time. This data helps with decisions like whether to adjust pricing, retire underperforming content, or focus on a particular type of writing.

Ghost's philosophy and positioning matter for certain creators. The platform is explicitly anti-venture capital and transparent about its business model and limitations. The founder and team regularly communicate about product decisions and business performance. This appeals to creators who are cautious about VC-backed platforms that might change their business model or features to appease investors. The open-source nature also means creators can, in theory, self-host Ghost or run it on their own infrastructure if they ever want to leave Ghost Pro's hosting, though most use Ghost Pro (the hosted version) for simplicity.

Compared to other publishing platforms, Ghost emphasizes independence and long-term sustainability for creators rather than viral growth or community virality. It doesn't include social sharing optimization, community features like discussion forums, or referral networks to drive subscriber growth through the platform. Instead, Ghost assumes creators drive their own audience through external channels (social media, email, organic search, word of mouth) and Ghost provides the infrastructure to monetize that audience. This is a different positioning from all-in-one platforms like beehiiv or Substack, which include built-in growth mechanics. For creators who already have an audience and want to build a membership business around it, Ghost's focus on sustainability and simplicity is an asset. For creators who need platform-driven growth mechanisms, other options might be better.

The integration ecosystem is moderate. Ghost connects with Zapier for automation, Google Analytics for traffic tracking, and various other tools, so creators can build workflows with other services. The API is available for custom integrations. This is less extensive than some competitors but covers the common needs for newsletter management and analytics.

Choose Ghost if you value independence, want transparent pricing with no commission on memberships, and prefer a simple, well-designed platform over an all-in-one ecosystem. If you already have an audience and want to build a sustainable membership business with reliable infrastructure and low fees, Ghost's straightforward approach and 0% transaction fees make it a strong choice.
